Mike McCarthy reveals how he is analyzing Trey Lance into his second year with the Cowboys.

As Trey Lance enters his second season with the Dallas Cowboys, he has received glowing accolades from various members of the organization for both his work ethic and his progress since the team traded for him last offseason. On Wednesday, head coach Mike McCarthy revealed the team’s objectives for evaluating the young quarterback throughout the preseason.

Cowboys' Mike McCarthy reveals the one thing Trey Lance needs to improve

“He’s crossing the thresholds in training, and I’m very pleased,” McCarthy said on Wednesday. “His athletic ability is exceptional. We’ve made certain changes to his movements — I won’t go into details — but you can notice the difference in timing.”

Quarterback Dak Prescott raised eyebrows this week when he told reporters that Lance is “pushing him” and increasing his reps. McCarthy says that’s exactly what was planned.

“Young quarterbacks need reps, and we’re trying to get him as many reps as we can throughout this offseason program,” said McCarthy. “He will spend a significant amount of time in preseason, which is intentional. He and I talk about preseason a lot because it’s what we’re working for.”

Because of the exorbitant price, the Cowboys are unlikely to exercise Lance’s fifth-year option for the 2025 season. However, if he beats out Cooper Rush to be Prescott’s official backup quarterback this season, the team will have to seriously consider extending the former first-round pick. Lance’s sustained development might net him a decent contract, either from Dallas or another team searching for a competent backup.

Dak Prescott: Lance is ‘pushing me’

Dak Prescott, the Cowboys quarterback, complimented Lance this week for pushing him during practice. Dallas handed up a fourth-round pick to acquire the former 49ers draftee, and despite not informing the starter, the two have built a positive working relationship.

“I’m excited for where he is now,” Prescott remarked, according to Jon Machota. “He works his ass off.” He is pressing me. I don’t like it when other people receive more reps than me, and Trey is the one I need to keep an eye on because he’s attempting to catch up in the rep count. That speaks to his dedication and hard work. I have seen it. He has grown better. “He can play.”

“As long he is getting better, I promise you, I’m getting better,” he continued. “I encourage it. I hope he pushes me. I am confident in who I am as a person and a player. I hope he does. “I hope he pushes me.”

During the preseason, the Cowboys will give Lance a lot of playing time. Dallas will face three West Coast clubs in the preseason: the Rams, Raiders, and Chargers.
