Cowboys' Mike McCarthy Reveals Plan For Ezekiel Elliott, RBs | Yardbarker

McCarthy said it wasn’t fair to expect Elliott, who is third in franchise history in rushing yards, to be “the man” again.

“I don’t think that is fair,” he stated. “What do you mean?” In the early years, he carried the ball more than any other player in football history. That is not going to be his role; we are a running back by committee. He’ll undoubtedly play at the level he’s demonstrated during my time here. I anticipate it. I don’t notice any slowing down in his movements.”

The Cowboys also haven’t had a running back committee in a long time. DeMarco Murray, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice formed a great little committee in the 2010s.

“Hey don’t get me wrong, they all like to carry the ball like the old days and have those touches,” McCarthy stated. “You want those guys fresh at the most important time of the year, that’s all part of planning and how you look at the projections in place.”

“The way we’re looking at it right now, there’s been some of that, and a lot of teams do that successfully,” [Stephen] Jones said of running back committees. “A lot of teams are leaning toward it because of the wear and strain that comes with this league. As I previously stated, we are not finished; we will continue to look at players and seek for ways to improve not only the running back position, but any other position.

Why the Cowboys think rookie left tackle Tyler Guyton has ‘tremendous upside’ – Jon Machota, The Athletic

The CBA prohibits rookies from practicing at the team facilities prior to rookie minicamp, therefore the minicamp was the Cowboys’ first opportunity to observe Guyton work out.

“It’s good to see him on the field,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy stated. “Obviously, his size, athletic abilities, and young age are impressive. He’s quite passionate. He’s quite excited about the possibility. I appreciate how young and raw he is. “I believe he has a tremendous upside.”

“As I told them in the team meeting,” McCarthy said, “this is a really special, cool time of your life, and it’s a five-year sequence in which you can change not only your own life but your family’s trajectory of what’s out there.”

“They created a strong initial impression on everyone. I hope they keep above the standard tomorrow. And it’s always nice to see them merge with the veterans, which will happen on Monday.”
