Terrion Arnold, a rookie for the Lions, hilariously reveals his competitive spirit by making fun of his own mother.
Last season, the Detroit Lions made a significant improvement as they defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game after winning the NFC North and two postseason games. The Lions improved in several areas, both offensively and defensively, but it was thought they needed to strengthen their secondary. To aid in that improvement, they selected Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold in the first round of the just concluded draft.
Arnold is highly trusted by Lions general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell, as evidenced by the fact that Detroit traded up to acquire him. They won’t, however, be able to judge his skill level or the extent of his participation until he begins to play competitively in the preseason and then when the 2024 season actually begins.
They can, however, be certain that they are obtaining a player who is as competitive as possible. He’s not the type of player who would lend sympathy to anybody, not even to his own mother.
Arnold remarked, “I would jam my mom into the dirt if she were lined up across me as a receiver right now. I’ll never forget the time my mom kicked my tooth out because we were just going at it so hard.” That is my current thinking, and my mother is aware of it. I just mean that in the straightforward sense that that’s just how I was raised and how I think about football.
Lions were vulnerable on pass defense last year, but Arnold has skills
The Lions’ 2023 overall defense ranking of 18th was a significant improvement after their 32nd place finish in 2022. Their greatest issue, though, was defending the pass. The Lions need to improve greatly in pass coverage if they hope to retain their NFC North championship. They finished 27th in the league in passing yards allowed.
That’s undoubtedly one of the reasons Arnold was selected as the number one choice. For the Crimson Tide past season, he had five interceptions, twelve passes defensed, sixty-three tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble.
The Lions also selected Ennis Rakestraw in the second round in an effort to change the position of cornerback from a weakness into a strength. Both draft picks will need to prove themselves over the preseason and offseason, according to assistant general manager Ray Agnew.
“It’s excellent for us that they will compete since I’m sure Terrion and Rakestraw believe they are superior. We’re looking for competition,” Agnew stated. “We want males to compete and believe they will get the spot; we don’t want those who submit to others. Both of those people, in my opinion, believe they will get started, and they have their job cut out for them.
