The Dallas Cowboys transformed a dire situation into a significant advantage.

Don’t look now, but going into the 2024 season, the Dallas Cowboys have transformed a position of weakness into a strength.

For as long as anybody can remember, tight end position has not been a concern for Cowboys supporters or the team.

Before the 2003 season, the Cowboys selected Jason Witten in the draft, and when he began playing a large number of snaps in 2004, they knew they had discovered their starting quarterback for the next several years.

The Cowboys looked at guys like Martellus Bennett to combine with Witten, but in the end they opted to let go of Witten and would replace him with a combination of Blake Jarwin and Dalton Schultz.

In Dallas, Dalton Schultz would become the guy, and he would post decent numbers for three years.

The Houston Texans would offer Schultz a new contract as a result of his play, and the Cowboys would have to select players in the draft to take his place.

In the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Cowboys would choose Wisconsin’s Jake Ferguson. In the undrafted free agency pool, they would also sign Indiana’s Peyton Hendershot, another tight end.

When they were rookies, the two would have shockingly identical numbers. Neither player would surpass 200 yards receiving, although both would have over 100. 2 touchdowns, with 8 of the receivers for each player going for first downs.

In their second year of professional wrestling, Jake Ferguson would become the guy. Ferguson would go on to have a Pro Bowl season with 71 receptions for 761 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Hendershot saw 164 snaps of action during the season, but his usage as a receiver would dwindle, in part because of injuries he sustained during the season.

Luke Schoonmaker, a tight end out of Michigan, was selected by the Cowboys in the 2023 NFL Draft, adding to their depth even though he would not play much in his rookie season.

In spite of having three names that may very well be guaranteed spots on the roster, the Cowboys would decide to add one more player.

Brevyn Spann-Ford, a Minnesota native, is another player the Cowboys added from this year’s undrafted free-agent pool that offers something special to the group.

Luke Schoonmaker is 6’5 even, Peyton Hendershot is 6’4 1/8, and Jake Ferguson is 6’4 7/8. At 6’6 1/2, Brevyn Spann-Ford is tall.

He can be a dependable contested-catch weapon due to his height, particularly in the red zone, and there’s hope that he can get past the drop problem that derailed his 2023 campaign.

The Cowboys now have Brevyn Spann-Ford, who can be a jump ball winner, Peyton Hendershot, who is a surefire intermediate threat, and Jake Ferguson, who can be a short to intermediate threat.

They transformed a position that was once questioned into one with several bodies playing many duties.
