“Thriller at Target Center: Caitlin Clark Shines -………as Lynx Fall 81-74 to Indiana Fever in Packed Arena!……

Despite the packed Target Center on Sunday, the Lynx attack faltered after 30 minutes.

This is starting to get problematic.

For Caitlin Clark’s first WNBA game at Target Center, an announced 18,978 spectators turned out to witness the Lynx face Indiana, the largest crowd in Lynx regular-season history. The excitement leading up to the game? Cheryl Reeve, the coach of the Lynx, made it plain before the game started that winning was her top priority.

That was not the case. The Lynx, who were ahead by seven points going into the fourth quarter, lost 84–71 after being outscored 28–14 in the last ten minutes.

The Lynx dropped their second straight game and their fifth in eight games while playing without their best player, forward Napheesa Collier (left foot), for the fourth game in a row. Before the Olympic break, the Lynx (16-8) had one more game before tying with Seattle for fourth place.

Reeve stated, “I think we played mainly good enough to win defensively.” “But our defense was under a lot of strain from our offense.”

Although Clark scored ten of her seventeen points in the fourth quarter, other players also contributed to the Fever’s (11–14) comeback.

The Lynx hit a fourth-quarter wall after closing the third quarter on a 12-3 surge to go up seven points. Clark’s free throw with three seconds remaining in the game gave the Lynx a seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Then, with just a second remaining in the shot clock, Kelsey Mitchell (21 points) made an uncontested corner three. After a stop for the Fever, Katie Lou Samuelson made a three-pointer to knot the score. Aliyah Boston (17 points, 16 rebounds) scored four straight points after the Fever called a timeout with 3:09 remaining to take a one-point lead in the game. Indiana went on a 10-3 run to end the game.

Reeve stated, “I thought we had a defense that gave up at the end of the shot clock.”

Bridget Carleton, who finished with 17 points, five three-pointers out of ten, seven rebounds, and six assists, remarked, “We sort just went stagnant.” “We were not finding our shooters, and we were not getting in the paint.”

The Lynx were just not scoring. The squad has struggled with efficiency ever since defeating New York to win the Commissioner’s Cup, and this is no exception.

Since then, the Lynx have shot under 40% in five of eight games, including Sunday. The Lynx have lost their last two games due to fourth-quarter deficits of 47-21.

Reeve stated, “At this point, Indiana is not a team that has hung its hat on defense.” Our percentage of two-point field goals (16 for 39 during the game, 0 for 4 in the fourth quarter) destroyed us. A few of our missteps and costly initiatives truly damaged us.”

Regaining Collier will be beneficial, but it may take till after the Olympic break. Reeve, however, also discussed her team’s incapacity to penetrate the paint and apply pressure to the rim. On Sunday, the Lynx lost 40–20 in the paint.

Reeve employed a small lineup that included 6-foot-1 Carleton at power forward, which contributed to the outcome.

Ultimately, though, the Lynx attack failed to perform well in the closing minutes.

Alanna Smith, the center, scored 13 of her 18 points in the first quarter. “When we make mistakes and they score, we have to be able to score to keep it close,” Smith stated. “There is a lot of pressure in the fourth quarter. You experience pressure when you make mistakes. We need to practice playing the entire forty minutes.”

In Minnesota, Caitlin Clark does not have to play at her best—she just wins.

In their first encounter of the season, the Indiana Fever overcame the Minnesota Lynx, the 2024 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup champions, 81-74, thanks to a strong fourth quarter performance.

From the beginning, there was back-and-forth play until Minnesota finished the third quarter with a seven-point advantage thanks to a 12-3 surge. For the first three quarters, Indiana had trouble shooting, particularly from 3-point range, but in the fourth quarter, Fever settled into a groove. Clark scored the majority of her points in the game’s last ten minutes, as they defeated the Lynx 28–14 in the last session. With just a minute remaining, Kelsey Mitchell prevented a win against Alanna Smith with a crucial block, contributing to her game-high 21 points.

Although there was a sizable audience supporting Clark as usual, Aliyah Boston took center stage. By the half, she had tallied a double-double, and her final stats included a career-high 16 rebounds and 17 points.

“She is simply amazing. “She simply rules,” Clark said on the ESPN broadcast following Boston’s victory. “She is incredibly talented and has no limits. I am so pleased of her because I believe she will only become better and better.”

The Fever improved to 11-14 on the season with their eighth victory in their past 12 games, continuing their recent winning streak.

In the land of 10,000 lakes, Sunday’s victory was just another one for the talented rookie. With Iowa at Target Center, Clark won the Big Ten tournament titles in 2023 and 2024, going 6-0 overall in the games played there. Since donning the Hawkeyes uniform, she has gone 9-0 in the state when combined with her three away games against Minnesota during her college career. She is 10-0 now.

Clark had 17 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 6 turnovers in the game’s final minutes. A five-game run in which Clark at least had a double-double ended on Sunday.

Clark struggled in the opening three quarters, scoring just seven points on 3-for-14 shooting and making just one of her nine attempted 3-pointers. Clark scored 10 points in the fourth quarter on 2-of-3 shooting without turning the ball over.

“We just managed to win, even though we did not shoot the ball the best. We are tenacious,” Clark remarked.

On Wednesday, Clark and the Fever will return to the floor for their first game back before the All-Star and Olympic breaks against the Dallas Wings.

Hull also praised Clark’s demeanor off the court, stating, “She is a fantastic player and a great person.” Getting to know her outside of basketball and the court is enjoyable.”

According to reports, the two are now taking a break and traveling to Mexico.

The Indiana Fever are at 11–15 and heading into the break are playing well after a difficult start.

They do not play until August 16th, when they host the Phoenix Mercury and Diana Taurasi at home.
