Wayne Rooney made lighthearted fun of his old Manchester United teammate Gary Neville at his amusing inaugural press conference as Plymouth Argyle’s manager.
It was just four months after Birmingham City fired Rooney that he was named manager of Plymouth on a three-year contract in May.
Since then, he has taken on a variety of roles, including serving as a BBC analyst for Euro 2024 and making appearances on podcasts to discuss his background.
But at his unveiling in Plymouth, the former Man United striker addressed a few important questions as he prepared for the start of the 2024–25 campaign.
One of them asked if he wanted to return to football management after leaving Birmingham, to which he responded with a pointed criticism of Neville.

“Because I don’t want to be the next Gary Neville,” Rooney responded when asked why he went back to the dugout.
Neville has previously been open about his turbulent tenure as Valencia’s manager between 2015 and 2016, which spanned barely four months and saw him win just three of his sixteen league games in charge.

Neville was open about his difficulties in comprehending what was happening from the dugout when he discussed it on his podcast Stick to Football back in May.
“I recall thinking that I was nowhere near that level when we played Athletic Bilbao three times, in both a league game and a Europa League quarterfinal, and Ernesto Valverde was the coach. He played a different system than I anticipated and then he changed during the game,” Neville recalled.
“I struggled to handle and see the game from pitch level, especially compared to how I see the game on the gantry, and I felt so much inferior to him.”

During the press conference, Rooney made light of the way he persuaded his wife Coleen to move to Devon.
“I told her it was the Monaco of England,” the 38-year-old clarified.
As they got ready for his next project, Rooney and his wife Coleen started looking at homes in and around the affluent Devon resort community of Salcombe back in May.

The former striker would need less than an hour to get from Salcombe, which is east of Plymouth, to Home Park Stadium.
The average price of a property in Salcombe over the past year was £1,072,781, according to the real estate website RightMove.
Detached homes accounted for the majority of sales in Salcombe over the last year, with an average price of £1,343,217.
The legend of England appears to be at ease in the region after referring to it as his “home” at the press conference.
“Everyone I’ve met has been incredibly nice,” Rooney said. I’ve spoken with a good number of people. I live here today, work here, and call this place home.
In addition to relocating to Plymouth with Coleen, Rooney has been busy this summer doing punditry duties, but he has told supporters that his first priority is the team.
“I was in Germany working on TV, but there was a lot of stuff going on,” he remarked. ”

In a May speech, Rooney clarified that a major reason for his comeback to management was the “exciting project” at Home Park Stadium.
Following his hiring, Rooney stated, “I would want to thank the chairman and board for their faith in me.” “Taking this post at Plymouth Argyle feels like the ideal next step in my career.”
