Gatlin and Spearmon explained how Kenny Bednarek has improved as a relay sprinter over the previous three years, despite being extremely raw at the delayed Tokyo Olympics.
Former American sprinters Justin Gatlin and Wallace Spearmon have outlined why they believe Kenny Bednarek is now ready to help the US 4x100m relay team compete for the title at the next Olympic Games in Paris.
Bednarek was part of the team that won the World Relays Championships in the Bahamas in May, and the US is ramping up preparations in hopes of reclaiming the gold medal that has escaped them for far too long.

Bednarek’s development as a sprinter has been hampered by injuries during the last two years, despite winning the 200m silver medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.
He was also a gem in the rough, and Gatlin is now discussing why it took Bednarek so long to become the athlete he is today on his Ready Set Go podcast.
“When Kenny entered the professional world, he only knew one gear, ‘go,'” Gatlin said.
“He didn’t get the nuances of track and field.” He is currently studying the game, how to run 100s and 200s, and how to excel as a top athlete.
Gatlin regarded Bednarek as naturally built for sprinting, having a physique that allows for quick turnover and athletic success. He emphasized Bednarek’s newfound confidence and ability to perform faultless relay handoffs—a critical quality in team sports.
Wallace Spearmon, who provided insights into Bednarek’s unorthodox road to elite status, emphasized his junior college experience and cross-country running background.
