Steelers detect troubling Justin Fields issue during minicamp.
The Steelers’ Justin Fields is being closely examined following poor performances in OTAs.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the teams to watch in the AFC North this season, as their quarterback duo of Justin Fields and Russell Wilson adjusts to the Steeler Way.
However, Fields faltered in a critical area at minicamp, which has some team insiders concerned as the spring and summer seasons begin.According to recent rumors, the former Ohio State football standout may still have a long way to go in his growth for Coach Mike Tomlin‘s club. Justin Fields’ throwing troubles are revealed
Ray Fittapaldo, a Steelers insider, offered the information in a recent piece on Steelernation.com.
“The knocks against Justin Fields coming in were mostly about accuracy,” he said. “Can he consistently put the ball where it should be? “Just from observing, and talking to the people in the building, that was a little bit of an issue.” Insider gives Justin Fields the benefit of the doubt.
The Steelers source made a qualifying statement about the Fields scenario that is worth noting. Fields and the new quarterback, Russell Wilson, are both in strange situations. Both Justin Fields and Wilson are regarded veterans at opposing ends of their careers, but they both entered a situation with high expectations for Coach Mike Tomlin’s Steelers. Pressure is undoubtedly a part, as is the newness of everything, from system to location to teammates.
“I wouldn’t make it a big deal in May and June, guys,” Fittapaldo added. “I think you have to remember, first and foremost, that he is joining a new team.
He’s working with a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. They’re presumably tinkering with his game before releasing him in July.” Last season, Fields completed 61.4% of his passes for a Chicago Bears club that was outmatched in almost every skill position on the field. Fields will still have the final word on whether or not he succeeds, and all eyes will be on him with heightened intensity by the time preseason arrives.
