CBS Philadelphia, PA At Comerica Park on Monday night, the Philadelphia Phillies executed a 1-3-5 triple play for the first time in almost a century against the Detroit Tigers.
Baseball Almanac states that the Tigers’ triple-play against the Boston Red Sox on July 11, 1929, was the last occasion an MLB team executed a 1-3-5 configuration.
Former Phillie Matt Vierling lined out to Aaron Nola in the bottom of the third inning, and Nola then passed the ball to first baseman Bryce Harper, striking out Carson Kelly, the catcher for the Tigers. After Vierling hit the ball off Nola, Harper threw to third baseman Alec Bohm to strike out shortstop Zach McKinstry, who advanced to home plate.
The Los Angeles Angels’ triple play on Monday night against the Tampa Bay Rays was the league’s first since 2023. According to MLB.com, it was also the Phillies’ first triple play since August 27, 2017, against the Chicago Cubs, and their 37th overall.
After winning their previous two series against the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phillies had a 51-26 record going into their game against the Tigers on Monday night. With a seven-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East, they own the best record in baseball.
