Bears Need to Jump on the Ideal FA Signing After Interest Pickup
Interest in a free agent who would be a great match for the Chicago Bears is growing as training camp draws near.
The Chicago Bears are nearing the finish of their preparations for the 2024 season, which kicks out at the end of July with training camp. Before then, Chicago will use the next several weeks to assess its roster and make any necessary additions or cutbacks in an effort to strengthen any of its summer position fights.
One position that is still up for grabs is starting center, where Coleman Shelton and Ryan Bates are viable choices. But since no player has emerged victorious in the competition thus far, the Bears may consider adding someone else.
If that’s the case, Chicago has one ideal target, but they need to move quickly.
Adam Schefter of ESPN recently disclosed that center Connor Williams is in high demand. After suffering a season-ending injury in 2023, the veteran has stayed available; however, with a return imminent, “multiple teams” are reportedly in talks to sign the former second-round choice.
Therefore, it wouldn’t be shocking if the Bears were among the teams corresponding with Williams before to training camp. However, when the veterinarian gets closer to returning to the field, they ought to enter the contest.
Williams, who the Dallas Cowboys selected in the 2018 draft, is a great fit for Chicago. In addition to his abundance of starting experience (77 starts in 83 games), he brings versatility to the offensive line having played center and left guard in the past.
Shelton only started as a primary starter two seasons ago, while Bates has never played guard full-time in his five-year career. As such, neither player is particularly proven to be relied upon at one of the most crucial positions in the game.
Williams’s inclusion solely offers advantages. In the worst situation, he may be a starter, but at the absolute least, he provides additional O-line depth.
