The ever-changing New York Mets depth chart has seen some recent activity. Although both hypothetical and real, the instant performances of particular players, at least in theory, cause them to rise or fall from day to day. This season’s Mets insert players into games for situational reasons. However, we have observed them develop a preference for one player over another, even when it contradicts splits and other analytical methods of reasoning.
As we approach Sunday’s finale against the Chicago Cubs, we can safely state that these two movements are moving up the depth chart and these two others are dropping down.
Jose Iglesias is climbing up the depth chart. Jose Iglesias started at third base for the Mets on Saturday, giving Mark Vientos a break. Iglesias, the lone middle infielder on the bench, is progressing beyond a backup. In fact, he probably should start.
The.400/.447/.457 slash line across 38 plate appearances is impossible to ignore. We’ve seen enough of him to realize what he brings to each game. There is a particular energy. A strong defender already, the remarkable bat skills have helped give the Mets a more complete lineup every time he begins.
To get the most out of Iglesias, play him as much as possible. He has fitted in wonderfully with his teammates. They lacked a veteran presence and attitude at the beginning of the season. Naturally, as Iglesias moves up the depth chart, someone will have to plummet. The Mets batter who is still not hitting well is the one he could replace.
