49ers Proposed Trade Swaps Brandon Aiyuk, a four-time national champion receiver

The San Francisco 49ers may find an ironic replacement for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk in a proposed trade with the Green Bay Packers, despite the star’s contract stalemate.

According to Alex Kay of Bleacher Report, the 49ers could trade Aiyuk to the Packers for wide receiver Christian Watson and a second-round selection pick in 2025. This provides the 49ers a terrific young wideout who learned from Aaron Rodgers and played on four national championship teams with North Dakota State. The 49ers can build for the future with a prime pick.

“Flipping Watson — who possesses arguably the most upside of any receiver on this roster — and a second-round pick to the 49ers could get a deal done,” Kay stated.

“The Niners’ brass as well,” Kay said. “Despite only playing in 23 games since being picked 34th overall in 2022, he has been a steady scoring force when healthy. He’s had 14 total touchdowns since entering the NFL, and his unique blend of size [6-foot-4, 208 pounds] and athleticism may be put to good use in San Francisco’s strategy.

Furthermore, the 49ers may use Watson as a kick returner. He succeeded at NDSU in that role, averaging 26.4 yards per return and two touchdowns. The Bison had 26 attempts. Since 2018, the 49ers have not had a kick returner make a touchdown.

The 49ers would strike an ironic bargain with Christian Watson.

On June 18, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Aiyuk wants more money than the 49ers are willing to provide. While Aiyuk might cost $26.5 million yearly according to Spotrac, the 49ers could obtain Watson at a relative discount with two seasons left on his four-year, $9.24 million rookie contract.

If the 49ers executed this move, it would be ironic timing for the franchise. Less than a year ago, San Francisco traded Watson’s former college quarterback, Trey Lance, to solidify Brock Purdy’s claim to the starting job.
