SPORTS Yankees defeat Orioles, but lose Aaron Judge to HBP.Aaron Judge scored on Giancarlo Stanton’s base single in the third inning and left the game with an injured left hand as the host New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 in the first of a three-game series between the American League’s top two clubs.
Baltimore pitcher Albert Suarez (3-1) hit Judge on the left hand around his pinky and knuckle with a 1-2 fastball in the third inning. He remained in the game after being temporarily checked out, sliding into third base on Alex Verdugo’s base hit, and scoring the Yankees’ second run on Stanton’s base hit. Read more here
After scoring, Judge returned to the clubhouse and took his spot in center field for the top of the fourth. But Trent Grisham hit for the slugger in the bottom half. After the game, Judge stated that X-rays and a CT scan showed no damage. Read more here: .
Nestor Cortes (4-5) of New York avoided early difficulty, allowing just five hits in six shutout innings. Cortes struck out six, walked none, and threw up and in against Gunnar Henderson in the sixth before forcing the Baltimore shortstop to ground out to second. Read more here: .
Anthony Volpe scored New York’s first run with an RBI single in the second inning. Gleyber Torres hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning and scored on DJ LeMahieu’s sacrifice fly in the fifth after being hit in the hand by reliever Keegan Akin. Read more here: .
Michael Tonkin and Luke Weaver each pitched a scoreless inning for the Yankees. Clay Holmes finished by giving up a two-run homer to Anthony Santander in the ninth inning. Suarez gave up three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked five, a career high. Read more here: .
The Orioles escaped being shut out for the third time this season. Baltimore also lost Jordan Westburg to left hip stiffness in the top of the second inning. Westburg was injured in a collision with Juan Soto on the basepath near third base during the Yankees’ right fielder’s interference call for the final out of the first inning. –Field Level Media.
