Pittsburgh Steelers: Pro Bowl Wide Receiver Says It’s ‘Surprising’ That Team No Longer Wants Him
A former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver was astonished when the team declined his services for the 2024 season. The Steelers’ offense underwent significant alterations after being eliminated from the playoffs in the Wild Card round.
The Pittsburgh Steelers made changes on offense
The additions of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields marked the most significant shift at quarterback. They sent quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles and saw Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky sign with AFC rivals. The Steelers added depth to their offensive line.
Wide receiver is one area that has not improved significantly. The Steelers sent Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers. They let go veteran Allen Robinson in March.
Allen Robinson was surprised the Steelers released him
Robinson signed with the New York Giants in free agency. According to the Giants’ website, Robinson was astonished when the Steelers released him:
“I know for them, they were doing a lot of changes over there, schematic changes, and different things like that,” Robinson explained. “So, that was rather surprising. But, at the end of the day, it’s all part of the business. I’ve been in this thing for 11 years.”
Robinson shouldn’t have been too surprised by the release. The Steelers needed to improve their offensive following a lackluster performance in 2023. Robinson did not perform well in Pittsburgh. Last season, the 2015 Pro Bowl receiver recorded 34 receptions for 280 yards.
Robinson is happy to be with the New York Giants
Robinson expressed his excitement to join the Giants and work with a young and talented group of wide receivers. He’ll be able to offer tips on the league to rookie receiver Malik Nabers, whom the Giants selected with the sixth pick in April.
He will also attempt to chase a ring before retiring. Robinson expressed his appreciation for the Giants’ successful culture:
“Whenever you can join a culture,” Robinson stated, “not to mention the Giants organization as far as being a successful place in general – whenever you can step into a culture like that as a football player, that’s awesome.”
