Cardinals Rookie Has Opportunity To Create Team History Following Impressive Start
What the St. Louis Cardinals are witnessing thus far from rookie shortstop Masyn Winn is definitely something to be excited about.
He has been nothing short of extraordinary since earning the starting shortstop position for the club during Spring Training. Unsurprisingly, the 22-year-old had a poor offensive start, but he has excelled on defense the entire season.
It is evident that his bat has improved as well because he is presently on a 16-game hitting streak. He is cutting all around. In 49 games played, he finished with a 308/.358/.440 slash line, two home runs, eighteen RBIs, eleven doubles, and seven stolen bases.
He has been so good that this season he has already amassed 2.3 wins above replacement. According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News Democrat, Winn also has an opportunity to become just the sixth shortstop for the Cardinals to record six or more wins above replacement in a single season.
“There have only been eight seasons in Cardinals history where a full-time shortstop (at least 75% of games) recorded more than 6 bWAR,” Jones stated. “The most recent was in 1989, and Ottie Smith possesses four of the eight. Bobby Wallace, Solly Hemus, Dick Groat, and Rogers Hornsby each received one. Masyn Winn has a 6.9 pace.
Despite being only 22 years old, Winn has already demonstrated this season that he will be a key member of the St. Louis team for a very long time. He’s been outstanding this year and could become one of the great Cardinals.
