Dolphins failed to address an extension with safety as he decided to leave.

Tua Tagovailoai is in line for a contract extension, but several other Dolphins are also eligible for agreements that wll keep them in the fold after 2024. That group includes safety Jevon Holland, who has one year left on his rookie contract.

According to an April story, Miami was interested in extending Holland’s contract, which general manager Chris Grier confirmed.

Tagovailoa and receiver Jaylen Waddle (who is due to play on his fifth-year option in 2025) are more significant financial priorities, however. Holland now awaits the start of negotiations in his case.

“I’m on the back burner,” the latter stated when asked about the lack of contract talks (via Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald). “I don’t know much.”I just work here. “I just work here.”

Holland, 24, has started all but three of his 46 regular and postseason games with the Dolphins. The former second-round pick had a solid season in 2022, recording 96 tackles and two interceptions.

He was limited to 12 games last season due to two MCL sprains. In 2023, Holland made 74 stops, caused three fumbles, and had a 99-yard pick-six.

The Oregon product also improved in coverage, allowing a 99.3 passing rating and two touchdowns as the closest defender. Nonetheless, his performance after returning to the field undoubtedly lowered his asking price for a new contract.

The overall environment of the safety position also works against him in terms of negotiating a lucrative deal.

Several high-profile safety were released during the 2024 offseason, and a handful of them are still unsigned well after the draft. While Antoine Winfield Jr. stands out, the position has recently been underestimated.

This will primarily effect veterans seeking third or fourth contracts, but it will undoubtedly play a role in Holland’s efforts to secure a rise on his second contract.

The Dolphins lost Brandon Jones and DeShon Elliott in free agency, but they kept Elijah Campbell and signed Jordan Poyer. The latter (who signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Bills) is expected to play a starting position in 2024.

The same will be true for Holland, and his performance will be especially interesting if no new contract is reached before the end of the offseason.
