Before an MRI, Brewers player Rhys Hoskins’ prognosis for his hamstring injury is favorable.

According to The Associated Press, Hoskins was “encouraged” to learn that his right leg had been hurt instead of his left. With a ruptured left ACL, Hoskins missed the entire 2023 season while playing for the Philadelphia Phillies. Asking Brewers manager Pat Murphy about the whereabouts of his slugger elicited a very diplomatic response. He wasn’t overly optimistic, even if he didn’t want to guess as to whether Hoskins would wind up on the injured list.

According to Murphy, “hamstrings usually don’t get better in a few days.” Obviously, that depends on how serious the injury is, which will become clear until Hoskins’ MRI is back. Hoskins faced the Pirates and went 0 for 1 before leaving.

Rhys Hoskins has been a huge part of the Brewers’ lineup

with January of last year, the Brewers signed Hoskins with the hopes that the veteran would add some oomph to their offensive.

In his 50 games since making his major league debut in 2017, Hoskins slashed.259/.396/.618 with 18 long balls and 48 RBI. Next year, in his first full season, Hoskins hit 34 home runs, drove in 96 runs, and showed off a.850 OPS. Throughout his time in Philadelphia, he was a constant presence in the lineup, leading the league in walks in 2019 (116) and recording an OPS of well over.800 in each of his first five seasons. Despite his little decline in 2022—.246/.332/.462—he still managed to record 30 home runs and 79 RBI.

Although Hoskins’s lack of defensive prowess is a concern, his bat has largely compensated for his glove shortcomings. Milwaukee, which is fourth in batting average, third in on-base percentage, sixth in home runs, and fourth in runs scored, has been among the top offensive teams in baseball this season. Even though they are only a half-game ahead of the Chicago Cubs in second place in the NL Central, the Brewers’ explosive offense is a major factor in their current 24-17 record.

Over the past six seasons, the Brew Crew has qualified for the playoffs five times and has won three division titles. In that time, though, they have only advanced to the NLCS once, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games back in 2018. Milwaukee’s record from the previous campaign was 92-70, and they lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Wild Card Round.

The Brewers are undoubtedly hoping that Hoskins can return to health quickly because they will need him to help them strive for a postseason return.
