The New Orleans Saints endured a difficult 2023 season. After adding quarterback Derek Carr in the summer, many people anticipated the Saints to win the NFC South. Unfortunately, New Orleans missed out on the playoffs outright.
As a result, this has caused some frustration. It has even raised worries about certain players’ futures with the team. Dennis Allen, the team’s head coach, is certain that one player will remain with them in the future.
Dennis Allen Believes CB Marshon Lattimore Will Stay
Throughout the offseason, trade rumors centered on Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore. This past weekend, head coach Dennis Allen addressed the rumors. The New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame was part of a celebrity golf tournament held at Chateau Country Club in Kenner, Louisiana.
During the golf competition, Allen chatted with Mike Triplett from NewOrleans.Football. During the interview, Allen stated that he had a “positive” conversation with Lattimore about his future with the team. Following their chat, Allen is sure that he and Lattimore will “move forward” together in the 2024 season.
Marshon Lattimore By the Numbers
Lattimore has been an integral member of the Saints’ defense for the past seven seasons. The structure of his deal was a major factor for trade talks this offseason.
Technically, he is under contract with the Saints until the end of the 2028 season. However, the Saints’ contract includes an opt-out option that they can choose to use after the 2024 season. As a result, some thought they might explore trading Lattimore to a team that could want to employ him as a rental.
So, what did he do in the first seven years of his NFL career? Well, Lattimore has 15 interceptions, five forced fumbles, and 375 total tackles.
New Orleans Saints Moving Forward
The Saints will be under pressure to produce in 2024. This could be a crucial season for them following a dismal year in 2023. If New Orleans takes another step back in 2024, the team’s future may look gloomy.
However, the Saints’ pass defense was a major reason they allowed so few scores per game last season. Allowing only 207.3 passing yards per week helped limit opponents to 19.2 points per game in 2023. For the Saints to advance next season, Lattimore and the rest of the secondary must maintain this level of performance.
