Matt Eberflus is delighted for ‘wonderful opportunity’ to coach Caleb Williams.
It’s not often that a coach has the opportunity to work with a quarterback as talented as Caleb Williams, but that’s precisely what Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has in store – ideally for many years.
Following a 7-10 season, the Bears selected Williams as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft last month. Eberflus told the Chicago reporters at the opening of rookie minicamp on Friday that coaching Williams would be a “great opportunity.”
“It’s really a great opportunity,” Eberflus stated. “It is pleasant to be able to do that. I know the entire building is eager about working together, not just with Caleb but with everyone. It’s certainly good to have a fresh start.
Williams finished his collegiate career with 10,082 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions while throwing for 66.9% in one season at Oklahoma and two at USC. In 2022, he earned the Heisman Trophy after throwing for 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns while also rushing for 382 yards and 10 scores.
When the NFL season begins in September, Williams will become the Bears’ 30th quarterback to start since 2000. The Bears, created in 1920, have never had a passer with 4,000 yards, something Williams aims to rectify.
Caleb Williams on leading as a rookie: ‘You gotta learn how to follow first’
Williams has been busy adjusting to Chicago’s playbook, which apparently began in early April, before he was officially a Bear. He’s also been learning from the roster’s veterans about what it takes to lead a team of 53 players.
“To be a great leader, you gotta learn how to follow first,” Williams stated. “Right now, I’m following all of the veterans. I’m following all of the coaches. I’m listening, with both ears open and my lips closed. When I’ve learned everything, including how we do things in our culture, you’ll be able to take the initiative. Then you may take control of everything and take the following steps.
“For right now though, I’m listening more than I’m speaking and talking.”
