Eight appearances by a Philadelphia Phillies starter setting records have resulted in team success this season. Ranger Suárez has a 7-0 record and a 1.50 ERA through eight starts, making him the only pitcher in Phillies history to do so. In addition, Suárez became the second pitcher in franchise history to go 7-0 through eight starts. Steve Carlton, another Phillies pitcher, accomplished this feat in 1981. Suárez became the fourth Phillies pitcher to win seven of his first eight starts since 1901. The others are Carlton from the 1981 season, Robin Roberts in 1951, and Grover Cleveland Alexander in 1911 and 1915. Suárez and Carlton were the two Phillies that did this.

According to Optastats, Suárez’s 0.722 WHIP is the best through eight starts by a pitcher whose club has won all eight games in the live ball era. During the dead-ball era that followed 1901, three players did this. The three players would be Christy Mathewson in 1901, Addie Joss in 1907, and Mordecai Brown in 1908. All three of those pitchers are in the Hall of Fame. Suárez presently has the best WHIP in the majors Among qualifying players. Aside from Suárez, the only other eligible pitchers with a WHIP less than 0.800 are Dylan Cease of the San Diego Padres and the AL WHIP leader, Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers. Suárez is the only qualified player with at least five victories, a 0.800 WHIP or better, and an ERA of 2.00 or higher. Suárez has the most wins in the majors with seven.

Suárez is 7-0 this season, with a 1.50 ERA, 270 ERA+, and 55 strikeouts. In addition, Suárez has a 0.722 WHIP and a 2.63 FIP. This season, Suárez leads all pitchers with 2.5 bWAR. Suárez’s 1.50 ERA ranks second in the majors behind Chicago Cubs starter Shota Imanaga among qualified pitchers. According to Sarah Langs, the 1.50 ERA is also the fourth best for a Phillies starter through eight starts since 1912, when earned runs were first recorded in the National League. Alexander had an ERA of 1.14 through eight outings in 1915 and 1.30 through eight innings in 1916. Meanwhile, Ad Brennan’s ERA was 1.46 after eight starts in 1913.

Since 2000, the Phillies have had four starting pitchers with ERAs less than 2.00 after eight starts. Suárez is one of three, along with Brett Myers in 2005, Roy Halladay in 2010, and Zack Wheeler this season. Suárez is the third pitcher in the National League to go 7-0 with a 1.50 ERA or higher in a team’s first 40 games of the season in the last 30 years. The other two, Pedro Martinez in 1997 and Jake Arrieta in 2016, earned the National League Cy Young Award that year. The Phillies’ most recent NL Cy Young Award winner was Halladay in 2010. Carlton was the most recent Phillies southpaw to win the National League Cy Young Award.

Pitching Dominance So Far For Suárez

Suárez is one of four pitchers to have recorded a complete game shutout this season. The remaining three players are Ronel Blanco of the Houston Astros, Max Fried of the Atlanta Braves, and Tanner Houck of the Boston Red Sox. Cease and Blanco are the only qualified pitchers with a higher batting average than Suárez. So far this season, opposing hitters have a.168 batting average against Suárez. Suárez’s 55 strikeouts this season are tied for seventh most in the majors among qualified pitchers. Suárez has pitched 54 innings this season, placing him second among qualified pitchers in the majors. Suárez is also tied for the third-lowest run allowed in the majors among qualified pitchers, at nine.
