Everton’s actions yesterday have made even more of a mockery of the Premier League’s PSR
Everton’s players and coaching staff have been crippled all season by circumstances beyond their control, with the majority of personnel sent in to put out previous fires.
Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell are the two leaders of this movement, which has achieved undeniable but gradual progress.
Their attempts to reconstruct a sinking ship in the middle of a voyage have been admirable, and so far appear to be successful. However, this summer will be the ultimate test to determine how far they can stretch their limited money without utterly depleting their roster.
Despite yesterday’s victory, their aim to prevent another severe PSR hit has been significantly hampered, and this time it is entirely down to the Premier League’s fault.
Everton cruise to a win over Sheffield United
Everton breezed past an already relegated Sheffield United side, putting on a display reminiscent of a team with nothing to play for.
It was an unusual game, but it was eventually settled by a few moments of skill, with Dwight McNeil’s threaded through pass finding Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who turned the goalkeeper and chipped it for Abdoulaye Doucoure to head into an empty net.
Aside from that, Jordan Pickford was required to make a couple smart saves before the game concluded, resulting in the lap of honour.
After not receiving such praise in many years, it was a welcome change to see the players and manager march around Goodison Park, basking in the sun and plaudits.
As an added bonus, they moved up to 15th place in the table after winning.
However, if the Premier League was based on points, the Toffees would now be 11th.
Everton’s Premier League position ruined by PSR
iNews estimates that each Premier League spot is worth approximately £3.1 million.
As a result, for Everton, a side in desperate need of funds, yesterday was far from a dead rubber encounter.
However, as previously said, the difference between where they are and where they should be is due to no fault of the current Everton players, yet they have been penalized.
The eight points accumulated from two distinct deductions, rather than their own sporting performances, have driven them down the rankings.
According to those figures, the four seats lost due to those deductions are worth around £12.4 million.
What a critical number that may be in the near future, as PSR continues to strive to keep the ambitious few from upsetting their valuable ‘big six’.
