On Saturday, New England revealed that Eliot Wolf had been promoted to handle the front office. Wolf was previously the team’s scouting director and has been acting as the de facto general manager since Belichick left. His new position will be executive vice president of player personnel.

According to the team’s announcement, Wolf’s responsibilities would include “overseeing the personnel department, managing the salary cap, and controlling the 53-man roster.” Owner Robert Kraft says he decided to promote Wolf after seeing how he worked with new coach Jerod Mayo during the offseason.

“As I have stated multiple times during the offseason, the plan was to observe the working relationship and involvement between Eliot and Jerod and see how they managed our offseason personnel decisions,” Kraft said in a press release. “Then, following the draft, we would formally initiate a process to establish the permanent organization of our personnel department. I’ve been impressed with Eliot’s managerial style and experience, and I’m delighted that he has decided to take on this new role.”

Wolf was considered as the most likely hire from the start, to the extent where the Patriots struggled to recruit people to interview for the position in order to comply with the Rooney Rule. They either found a means to meet those standards or simply accepted the penalty, with the former being more frequent.
