Giorgos Giakoumakis opens up brutally about his reasons for leaving Celtic
Giorgos Giakoumakis, a former striker for Celtic, has spoken out about his decision to leave the team, citing the difficult weather in Glasgow and unfulfilled contract expectations as major contributing factors.
Giakoumakis gave candid answers on the Offside with Taylor Twellman podcast, discussing his move to Atlanta United.
Despite a difficult start, Giakoumakis, who spent a season and a half at Celtic, proved his worth on the field in the 2021/22 season, scoring 26 goals and tying for the joint top scorer in the Scottish Premiership.
One of the things that frustrated Giakoumakis at Celtic was that, while Kyogo was fit, he was frequently the backup option.
“All right, so what do you know? You must now give me what I am due. I held out for it. They then responded negatively.
In addition to contractual concerns, Glasgow’s atmosphere was a major factor in his choice.
“In the end, I asked myself if I wanted to travel there again given the terrible weather—possibly even worse than Glasgow? I went out once a year in the park with my son while we lived in Glasgow. That is a dreadful situation. That was the reason I told Midtjylland, “Thank you, but I at least need the normal weather.”
Carlos Bocanegra, the technical director and vice president of Atlanta United, went above and beyond to personally meet with Giakoumakis, which eventually sealed the deal.
“The only filmmaker who traveled to Glasgow specifically to meet me was Carlos. And I was rather grateful for that. They immediately demonstrated to me how valuable they think I am. We simply want to meet you, regardless of whether you will be able to sign for [us].
