Lakers News: Following the series loss to the Nuggets, D’Angelo Russell was fined $25,000 for verbally abusing a game official.

D’Angelo Russell of the Los Angeles Lakers was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Saturday for verbally criticizing a referee. The NBA reported that his actions took place on the court following the Lakers’ Game 5 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Monday night, which ended the team’s season.

Although it’s unclear exactly what Russell said to the official after Game 5, it makes sense that he was angry and irritated given the unfortunate outcome of the Lakers’ season. He will go into the summer with a bit lighter wallet than previously due to this fine, yet it is certain that the NBA will not accept him lashing out at an official.

Russell had more ups and downs during the series over the Nuggets. Despite playing well in two of the games, he was largely passive in the other three. This includes losing the season finale Game 5 with 14 points and six assists while only shooting 6-of-15 and making 2-of-10 from three-point range. It also includes going scoreless at home in Game 3.

Russell was outstanding for the Lakers during the regular season, especially from the middle of January when they were vying for postseason positioning, so it is important not to downplay his accomplishments.

Russell averaged 18.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in 76 games during the regular season. He also shot 45.6% from the field and 41.5% from three point range on 7.1 attempts per game.

Russell appears to have some clout heading into the summer as a result of his season. Following a stellar season, he has the choice to test free agency with a $18.7 million player option, or he may decline it and return to the Lakers or be moved elsewhere.

Given this, Russell hopes to be able to use that leverage to decide going forward what he believes is best for his family and himself.

“I didn’t say I didn’t give it some thought. Russell stated at the end of the season, “I’ll attempt to take advantage of being in that position now with a little leverage since I understood what position I was going to put myself in when I signed my deal last year.

Russell has enjoyed his second season with the Lakers, but given how things work out this summer, it’s possible he’ll be leaving again.
