Former Los Angeles Lakers point guard Darius Morris passed away at age 33.
The former Michigan standout was a player for the Nets, Grizzlies, 76ers, and Clippers.
His alma institution, the University of Michigan, revealed on Saturday that Darius Morris, a 33-year-old point guard with four NBA seasons under his belt who played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Brooklyn Nets, had passed away. It was not revealed what caused the death.
Under head coach John Beilein, Morris played at Michigan for two years, making it to the NCAA tournament in his sophomore 2010–11 season. That season, he set a new school record with 235 assists; Trey Burke (260) and Zavier Simpson (236) have since surpassed it. Following two years of college, Morris entered the NBA Draft, with the Lakers—his local team—selecting him with the 41st overall pick.
Morris averaged 3.6 points in 67 games as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers during the final two postseasons of Kobe Bryant’s legendary career. Morris played two postseason games for the Lakers against the San Antonio Spurs in the 2012–13 season, but the Lakers lost the series in a four-game sweep due to Bryant’s injury in 2013.
He would play for four different teams in the NBA for an additional sixty-five games. He achieved a career high in 2013–14 with 20 points in a game while playing for the 76ers. He played in the G-League and abroad after leaving the NBA, and he ended his career after the 2019–20 season, having played for the French team BCM Gravelines–Dunkerque.
