Meryl Streep is one of the industry’s best performers, and she has played roles that are both tough and iconic. Her performance of Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia remains one of the best.

While fans enjoyed seeing Streep in the first half of the Phyllida Lloyd-directed film, many expected her to reprise her role in the second half. However, much to the audience’s dismay, Streep declined the invitation for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Aside from the Little Women actress, other cast members from the original film declined to return for the sequel, which was released in 2018. Mamma Mia 2 director Ol Parker explains why the cast members did not return for the sequel.

Speaking to the media portal, the filmmaker stated, “There was always a strong desire for a sequel. Given how much money the original made, the studio couldn’t have asked for anything more. However, there was an immediate struggle. Not every narrative need another chapter. So they couldn’t find a suitable version that made dramatic sense.”

Rumored sources have told the media that Mamma Mia 3 may be in the works at the studio. However, one of the reliable sources told the media earlier that the film had not yet begun filming, but that many of the previous cast members would return for the third chapter.
