Phoenix (AP) — Caitlin Clark scored 15 points, dished out 12 assists, and grabbed nine rebounds as the Indiana Fever defeated the Phoenix Mercury 88-82 on Sunday.

Clark was one rebound shy of a triple-double, but he shot just 4 of 14 from the field and 2 of 10 from three. But she converted two free throws with 19.9 seconds left to put the Fever up three. Indiana trailed by as many as 15 in the first half.

Kelsey Mitchell’s basket with 35 seconds remaining gave Indiana the lead for good. She closed it out with two free throws in 12.9 seconds. Mitchell had 16 points, all in the second half.

Aliyah Boston scored 17 points and eight rebounds, while NaLyssa Smith contributed 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Fever, who finished June 7-4 after falling 1-8 in May. Temi Fagbenle scored 10 points for Indiana.

Kahleah Copper, who was third in the WNBA in scoring at 22.7 points per game entering Sunday, managed only seven points on 3-of-15 shooting before fouling out in the closing seconds. However, she was primarily responsible for Clark’s security.

It was Taurasi and Clark’s first on-court meeting. Taurasi, 42, is the WNBA’s all-time top scorer entering her 20th season. Clark was born while she was playing for Connecticut. The 22-year-old Fever rookie noted before the game that Taurasi was one of her idols since she first learned about the WNBA.

When Clark was picked first overall following a career at Iowa that included back-to-back NCAA Championship games, Taurasi replied, “Reality is coming,” when questioned about Clark entering the league. Later, Taurasi clarified that she meant it would be a difficult adjustment to professional basketball.

“It’s amazing to see what Caitlin has accomplished, and one thing I really like about her is that she enjoys the game,” Taurasi remarked after the game. “She’s put in the effort, and she’s faced a lot of challenges, but she keeps getting better with each game. Her future is quite promising.

The Mercury took an 8-0 lead and led 49-38 at halftime, with Griner and Taurasi both scoring 13 points. The Fever embarked on a 17-0 run in the third quarter, leading by as many as 10 points, but Phoenix closed to 67-64 at the end of the period.

“We were emphasizing get out and run, move the ball and get some good shots,” Boston told reporters.

Taurasi stated, “We may have settled a little too much, become stagnant, and had better movement (in the first half).” “They were running faster than us.”

The first half saw two skirmishes, both of which occurred during dead ball situations. Griner received a technical foul in the first quarter when the teams were setting up for a free throw, and the second occurred after a foul was called and the teams became involved while huddling near each other under the Indiana hoop.

Two players from each team received technicals: Fagbenle and Erica Wheeler for the Fever, and Copper and Cloud for the Mercury.

In the closing minute of the half, Smith was called for a flagrant-1 foul on Taurasi. Cloud was later flagged for a foul on Katie Lou Samuelson, who hit both free shots to narrow the score to 78-77 with 2:17 left.

Phoenix will host Connecticut on Monday. Indiana completes a five-game road trip in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
