As stunning as the show of support for my father has been, to be honest, I am not shocked, stated Michael Mays in the press release. The Dodgers have stated that Mays will be at Monday’s game. “But perhaps the most telling evidence of his influence is that his team’s enduring adversary made it their mission to honor him.”

Willie Mays’ influence on baseball fans transcended rivalries even before his passing. In 2016, Vin Scully, a former Dodgers broadcaster, informed him, “You know that you have always been my favorite player, even if you wore the wrong uniform.” However, you have also been the best player I have ever seen, as I have informed everyone.

During his 23-year Major League Baseball career, which began in New York before the franchise relocated to San Francisco in 1958, Mays played for the Giants in all but one season. His honors (24 times as an All-Star, 12 times as a Gold Glove winner, and twice as MVP) and statistics (660 home runs, 3,293 hits, and 1,909 RBI) amply demonstrate his status as one of the greatest players in baseball history.

These numbers include phenomenal performance levels against the Dodgers, whose rivalry with the Giants dates back to the franchises’ East Coast days. The Dodgers are the team against whom he hit the most home runs (98 out of 660), with the Cubs being the next-highest opponent with 92 hits. He brought those dingers with him from Ebbets Field to Dodger Stadium to the LA Coliseum, the locations of this pregame celebration.
