“Caitlin Clark Takes the Spotlight:-……..- Rookie Becomes Biggest Draw in WNBA History” As S………

Caitlin Clark and the WNBA are getting a lot of attention. It's about far more than basketball - The Mainichi

Caitlin Clark, the rookie for the Indiana Fever, is an attraction, as the figures show.

In the 27-year history of the WNBA, she has garnered more attention than any other player has, and she and the Fever have been putting up astounding viewing and attendance figures.

Over All-Star weekend, WNBA Chief Growth Officer Colie Edison told IndyStar, “I am not going to dispute the Caitlin Clark effect.” “And the most significant thing we have observed is that, on average, we have over 1.2 million views. That kind of expansion is crucial because it allows us to reach a wider audience and attract new followers. Thus, Caitlin had a major role in drawing in a large number of new supporters in addition to our other rookies who entered this draft through the NCAA. Observing this draft class has been incredible.”

WNBA Rookie of the Year: Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark’s early comebacks were “almost too wonderful to be true.”

“I am on holiday,”Caitlin Clark finally gets a break from the Olympics.

The WNBA made an effort to outpace the league’s now-unprecedently high viewership figures. Initiating its marketing effort during the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, gan aired 36 of the 40 games played by the Fever on national television prior to Indiana formally selecting Clark with the first overall pick in the 2024 draft.

According to WNBA Chief Marketing Officer Phil Cook, the league is attempting to attract different fan bases. These include casual fans who wish to participate in the conversation, as well as general basketball enthusiasts who may watch NBA or college basketball on a regular basis. Additionally, there are fans who focus on special occasions like the NBA Finals or Super Bowl.

And these new fans are watching to witness Clark dish out a WNBA record 19 assists in a single game or record the first triple-double by a rookie.

“This year, our target demographic was everyone who enjoys basketball, large sporting events, or simply follows sports on a casual basis,” Cook told IndyStar. “And it piques their attention when you post performances like that. “19 assists in a 40-minute game in the W? That is astounding,” they turn to look away. The loyalists may have said, “Oh yes, our game has been this fantastic for 20 years, you just have not been watching,” because these figures are, like, unprecedented.

Record-breaking viewing began even before Clark performed her first professional minute. A record 2.4 million people watched the WNBA draft in April, surpassing the previous high of 601,000 views established in 2004 when Diana Taurasi of UConn was selected by the Phoenix Mercury.

As the league approaches the Olympic break for the 2024 Paris Games, such records have not stopped. With 2.12 million viewers, the Fever’s season-opening game versus Connecticut—Clark’s first game as a professional—set a record for ESPN2 ratings.

The 16th WNBA game of the season to get more than a million viewers was Indiana’s game versus the Dallas Wings before the Olympic break, with 1.7 million viewers setting a new league record. Clark and the Fever appeared in 14 of the 16 games, according to Sports Media Watch.

Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky, another rookie, has also contributed to the Fever’s top two most-watched games. Since Reese’s LSU defeated Clark’s Iowa in the 2023 national championship, the two have been considered rivals since their college days. With their draft selections to teams three hours apart, the competition grew even more intense, and the two leading candidates for Rookie of the Year now face off against each other four times a season in the Eastern Conference.

With 2.25 million viewers, the second meeting between the Fever and Sky on June 16 set a record for WNBA television viewing. With 2.3 million people, the rematch just a week later established yet another record for ESPN’s viewership.

“I am pleased by how easily those athletes are integrating into what I thought was going to be a tougher transition—the caliber of play coming into our league, led by Caitlin, led by an Angel,” Cook remarked. “But it is not, and I believe that every fan and the media are really impressed.”

Additionally, almost all of the Fever’s road games have sold out. With an average of 16,698 spectators at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, just 1,000 less than a sold-out crowd, Indiana leads the nation in overall attendance. Compared to the Fever’s average of about 4,000 supporters just a year ago, there has been a notable increase.

“We are beginning to see how good these athletes really are, and they are coming to our live games because, well, if you are from Indianapolis, you know, those are really expensive tickets,” Cook remarked. “… an audience that values great sport, great basketball, and even the casual viewer is benefiting from the job that these guys are performing on the floor.”

The WNBA as a whole has improved because to Clark and Reese’s fan base. With 3.4 million viewers, up 305% from 2023, the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game set a record for viewership. The two rookies were involved in the game.

And the broadcast partners of the league are paying attention.

Starting with the 2026 season, the WNBA this week formally announced an 11-year agreement with Disney, NBCUniversal, and Amazon. Networks including ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and NBC as well as streaming services Peacock and Amazon Prime will broadcast the games. Negotiated in tandem with the NBA, that portion of the agreement will give the WNBA $2.2 billion over the course of 11 years, or $200 million annually. The league may also choose to enter into a separate agreement with CBS, ION, or other networks, which might result in an additional $60 million in revenue annually. After three years, the WNBA may renegotiate after assessing the league’s expansion.

According to Cook, “I think the partners are realizing how valuable this audience is to their platforms.” We are an audience unlike any other. Not all of the spectators watching sports are like this. Our sportsmen provide unique products, and we have this unique audience. They have a fantastic combination of being the world’s greatest athletes and having the most culturally significant individual opinions. Additionally, the broadcast partners find it quite appealing due to this combination.”

Indiana falls to Connecticut in WNBA opener – San Diego Union-Tribune

Despite the packed Target Center on Sunday, the Lynx attack faltered after 30 minutes.

This is starting to get problematic.

For Caitlin Clark’s first WNBA game at Target Center, an announced 18,978 spectators turned out to witness the Lynx face Indiana, the largest crowd in Lynx regular-season history. The excitement leading up to the game? Cheryl Reeve, the coach of the Lynx, made it plain before the game started that winning was her top priority.

That was not the case. The Lynx, who were ahead by seven points going into the fourth quarter, lost 84–71 after being outscored 28–14 in the last ten minutes.

The Lynx dropped their second straight game and their fifth in eight games while playing without their best player, forward Napheesa Collier (left foot), for the fourth game in a row. Before the Olympic break, the Lynx (16-8) had one more game before tying with Seattle for fourth place.

Reeve stated, “I think we played mainly good enough to win defensively.” “But our defense was under a lot of strain from our offense.”

Although Clark scored ten of her seventeen points in the fourth quarter, other players also contributed to the Fever’s (11–14) comeback.

The Lynx hit a fourth-quarter wall after closing the third quarter on a 12-3 surge to go up seven points. Clark’s free throw with three seconds remaining in the game gave the Lynx a seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Then, with just a second remaining in the shot clock, Kelsey Mitchell (21 points) made an uncontested corner three. After a stop for the Fever, Katie Lou Samuelson made a three-pointer to knot the score. Aliyah Boston (17 points, 16 rebounds) scored four straight points after the Fever called a timeout with 3:09 remaining to take a one-point lead in the game. Indiana went on a 10-3 run to end the game.

Reeve stated, “I thought we had a defense that gave up at the end of the shot clock.”

Bridget Carleton, who finished with 17 points, five three-pointers out of ten, seven rebounds, and six assists, remarked, “We sort just went stagnant.” “We were not finding our shooters, and we were not getting in the paint.”

The Lynx were just not scoring. The squad has struggled with efficiency ever since defeating New York to win the Commissioner’s Cup, and this is no exception.

Since then, the Lynx have shot under 40% in five of eight games, including Sunday. The Lynx have lost their last two games due to fourth-quarter deficits of 47-21.

Reeve stated, “At this point, Indiana is not a team that has hung its hat on defense.” Our percentage of two-point field goals (16 for 39 during the game, 0 for 4 in the fourth quarter) destroyed us. A few of our missteps and costly initiatives truly damaged us.”

Regaining Collier will be beneficial, but it may take till after the Olympic break. Reeve, however, also discussed her team’s incapacity to penetrate the paint and apply pressure to the rim. On Sunday, the Lynx lost 40–20 in the paint.

Reeve employed a small lineup that included 6-foot-1 Carleton at power forward, which contributed to the outcome.

Ultimately, though, the Lynx attack failed to perform well in the closing minutes.

Alanna Smith, the center, scored 13 of her 18 points in the first quarter. “When we make mistakes and they score, we have to be able to score to keep it close,” Smith stated. “There is a lot of pressure in the fourth quarter. You experience pressure when you make mistakes. We need to practice playing the entire forty minutes.”

WNBA: Caitlin Clark helps the Indiana Fever beat the Minnesota Lynx, A'ja Wilson makes history again - Eurosport

In Minnesota, Caitlin Clark does not have to play at her best—she just wins.

In their first encounter of the season, the Indiana Fever overcame the Minnesota Lynx, the 2024 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup champions, 81-74, thanks to a strong fourth quarter performance.

From the beginning, there was back-and-forth play until Minnesota finished the third quarter with a seven-point advantage thanks to a 12-3 surge. For the first three quarters, Indiana had trouble shooting, particularly from 3-point range, but in the fourth quarter, Fever settled into a groove. Clark scored the majority of her points in the game’s last ten minutes, as they defeated the Lynx 28–14 in the last session. With just a minute remaining, Kelsey Mitchell prevented a win against Alanna Smith with a crucial block, contributing to her game-high 21 points.

“She is simply amazing. “She simply rules,” Clark said on the ESPN broadcast following Boston’s victory. “She is incredibly talented and has no limits. I am so pleased of her because I believe she will only become better and better.”

The Fever improved to 11-14 on the season with their eighth victory in their past 12 games, continuing their recent winning streak.

In the land of 10,000 lakes, Sunday’s victory was just another one for the talented rookie. With Iowa at Target Center, Clark won the Big Ten tournament titles in 2023 and 2024, going 6-0 overall in the games played there. Since donning the Hawkeyes uniform, she has gone 9-0 in the state when combined with her three away games against Minnesota during her college career. She is 10-0 now.

Caitlin Clark figures
Clark had 17 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 6 turnovers in the game’s final minutes. A five-game run in which Clark at least had a double-double ended on Sunday.

Clark struggled in the opening three quarters, scoring just seven points on 3-for-14 shooting and making just one of her nine attempted 3-pointers. Clark scored 10 points in the fourth quarter on 2-of-3 shooting without turning the ball over.

“We just managed to win, even though we did not shoot the ball the best. We are tenacious,” Clark remarked.

On Wednesday, Clark and the Fever will return to the floor for their first game back before the All-Star and Olympic breaks against the Dallas Wings.
