Thiago scored twice on his debut for Thomas Frank’s team after officially joining Brentford at the beginning of July for a club-record £31 million price from Club Brugge.
However, the injury—which the team revealed on Thursday—shadowed his impressive start.
Thiago will undergo more tests the following week to ascertain the severity of his injury, and he will be sidelined for Brentford’s second preseason match against Benfica.
Thiago, who led Club Brugge to their 19th Jupiler Pro League championship with 18 goals in 34 games, is a major loss for the Bees.
The 23-year-old is anticipated to miss Brentford’s debut Premier League matchup with Crystal Palace on August 18, 2024–25.
However, Thiago’s injury also raises concerns about Ivan Toney’s long-term status with the team.
Toney, who missed a large portion of the previous season, was a member of the England team that advanced to the Euro 2024 final and finished with four goals in 17 Premier League games.
With Arsenal, Tottenham, and West Ham all eager to get the 28-year-old, there have been rumors that he will be leaving the Bees during this transfer window.
They could decide to retain Toney for the upcoming season if Thiago’s injury turns out to be more serious than initially thought, but doing so would put them at risk of losing him to a free agent when his contract ends the following year.
