This offseason, the Dallas Mavericks made a significant move when they signed and traded for Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors. Thompson has only ever played for the Warriors, where he co-won four titles with the all-time great Stephen Curry, the shooter. Although Thompson’s combination alongside Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic is ideal on paper, others believe things won’t go as planned at first.
When Thompson joined the Mavericks, NBC Sports Bay Area spoke with former Dallas Maverick and current Charlotte Hornet Seth Curry about the former player’s decision.
“Playing with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving—rather than in that Steph system, with Curry and Draymond Green—will need a slight adjustment for Klay.”

Additionally, Seth Curry stated on an NBC Sports Warriors podcast, “Seeing Klay in that Mavericks uniform with the number 31 doesn’t feel right, but he had a tremendous career in Golden State.” Winning those titles there cemented him in his success. The backcourt of the “Splash Brothers” is the best of all time, and they accomplished many incredible feats.
Seth Curry has a few clear connections to this case. He is a former Maverick who also played for the Warriors in the 2013–14 G-League season. He is the brother of Stephen Curry, the other half of the “Splash Brothers.”
Klay Thompson will need to adapt to the playing style of the Mavs. The Mavericks have possessions where Doncic and Irving can control the ball for the majority of a possession, in contrast to the Warriors’ offense, which is more motion-based. Although Jason Kidd and the Mavs should prepare to add some sets to have Thompson coming off screens, Thompson will give those two plenty of room to maneuver.
