All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso of the New York Mets is still on track to become a free agent after the current season, therefore some scouts feel that he is “certainly pressing.”
One scout recently told John Harper of SNY that Alonso “gets too big with his swing when he pushes too hard.” Furthermore, he frequently chases the fastball upstairs. He approaches the ball shorter and faster when he is at ease, and the ball leaps from his bat.”
Alonso struggled at the plate in the spring as the Mets lost more games than it won, much like several other players. Although the Amazins eventually heated up and secured a wild-card playoff berth on Tuesday, Alonso hasn’t yet found his rhythm. With 19 home runs, 51 RBI, and an OPS of.772, Alonso batted.240 in his first 95 games of the season.
Alonso hit 37 home runs in 2021, and he hasn’t concluded a season with fewer than 40 since then.
Regarding Alonso, another scout stated, “He overswings and gets in his own way at times.” This year, I’ve witnessed a lot of that. Wanting that large contract has to be a factor, in my opinion.”
That scout believed Alonso could “jump-start his second half” of the season with a “confidence boost” from taking part in Monday night’s Home Run Derby. But the “Polar Bear” only hit 12 home runs in that competition, which led to their elimination in the first round.
Francisco Lindor of the Mets said over the offseason that some players are unable to produce when they are also concerned about their long-term prospects. Assuming the Mets are still a real contender for the postseason through the end of the month, team owner Steve Cohen is unlikely to allow president of baseball operations David Stearns to shop the fan favorite, as Alonso confirmed on Monday that he doesn’t want to go anywhere before the July 30 MLB trade deadline.
There have been rumors linking the Mets to outfielder Juan Soto of the New York Yankees, but it’s uncertain if Cohen would pay both Alonso and Soto in the upcoming offseason. Despite Alonso’s patchy play, the Mets managed to reclaim their postseason positions in the National League, but they’ll probably need him to get back to his peak if they want to give their supporters an October to remember.

Jose Buttó excels in relief as the New York Mets secure a 7-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies…..
Colorado Rockies are defeated 7-3 by the New York Mets thanks to a strong performance by relief pitcher Jose Buttó.
The New York Mets defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-3 on Saturday thanks to Jose Buttó’s another strong outing in relief. He pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings and earned the win. With this win, the Mets matched their season high of four games above.500.
With a three-run home run in the eighth inning, Francisco Lindor increased the margin even further and helped the Mets finish 49-45, their best since beginning 12-8 on April 20.
On May 15, Buttó was assigned to Triple-A Syracuse with a 3.08 ERA in his first seven starts of the season. He returned on July 2 to support the struggling bullpen. He has since flourished, amassing a 3-0 record with one save and allowing just one run in his first four outings as a reliever. He had only made 15 professional relief appearances prior to his most recent assignment.
Carlos Mendoza, manager of the Mets, said, “When we sent him down, he immediately said he was willing to do whatever was needed.”
He expressed a desire to return to the majors and help the team, even though he was originally scheduled to start in Triple-A. He’s finally getting his chance and using it to his advantage.
Buttó managed the Rockies well, obtaining key outs and averting dangerous circumstances. In order to prevent a possible rally, he forced a double play after replacing Christian Scott in the fifth inning. Even though he gave up a single and a walk in the eighth, he limited the harm.
Buttó highlighted teamwork and preparedness while considering his position, saying, “The key lesson is always being prepared for any scenario and doing what it takes to help the team win games.”
Another key player for the Mets, pitcher Dedniel Núñez, earned his first career save by pitching a spotless ninth inning to end the game. With 21 appearances this season, his outstanding 2.35 ERA is still in place.

Starling Marte of the Mets is expected to miss at least a month due to a knee bone injury.
NEW YORK (AP) – Due to a major bone bruise in his right knee, outfielder Starling Marte of the New York Mets is projected to miss at least a month of action.
On Tuesday, manager Carlos Mendoza stated Ever since the June 3–5 series against the Washington Nationals, Marte has been playing with discomfort.
“Playing (in) D.C., he went after a ball and then when he got back to his position, he felt something,” Mendoza explained.
Due to maintenance concerns, Marte missed four games between June 5 and last Friday. He then left the game after only one at-bat during Saturday’s 8-1 defeat to the Chicago Cubs. Mendoza stated that Marte will have to miss two weeks of baseball in order to have another MRI.
In Tuesday’s Subway Series opener against the Yankees, Tyrone Taylor started in right field in Marte’s place. He will probably alternate there with DJ Stewart and Ben Gamel, the latter of whom was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday to take Marte’s spot on the active roster.
