Coley recognized the inexperience and potential of the West Indies team.
In order to prepare for the second Test against England, West Indies coach Andre Coley has urged his squad to draw on the tenacity they showed against Australia earlier this year at the Gabba. After a humiliating innings loss in the opening Test match at Lord’s, Coley thinks his team can learn from its mistakes and prevail in Nottingham. Coley sees similarities and opportunity for his squad in their performance against Australia, when they overcame a big deficit in the first Test to overcome the current World Test Championship winners at the Gabba.

According to Coley, “they would have taken a lot of positives from that [the Gabba Test]”. “I think the process we went through to be able to achieve that was a lot more impactful (than winning) in terms of how we were able to bounce back.” Coley underlined the need of poise and perseverance in a series, pointing out that a shaky beginning does not guarantee a competitive conclusion. “It serves as further evidence that, even in a series, a team may struggle to get off to a slow start, gather themselves, and turn things around to emerge victorious and possibly force a decisive game three,” the player continued. “There are significant advantages to be gained from this first Test as well as from the challenges we would have experienced over the previous six months.”

In the first Test, which was also the final Test for England’s renowned seamer James Anderson, the Caribbean squad battled and lost by an innings and 114 runs at Lord’s. Coley emphasized the necessity for better play, especially in the field, as the three-match series moves to Trent Bridge. “I hope to witness us displaying even greater intensity than we are accustomed to in the field,” he said. “In my opinion, we didn’t play our best in terms of exerting pressure on the England hitters during this Lord’s Test match. We must undoubtedly improve on that in preparation for the upcoming test.”

As of right now, the West Indies are sixth in the World Test Championship rankings; to be competitive, they need to win their final two games in England. Coley said that team spirit is high despite the loss in London and anticipates improved English circumstances going ahead.

The outcome was not what we would have hoped or anticipated, but he still felt that there was a lot to learn and take away from the experience. “Having been here now for about two weeks, having a little of time to acclimatise to conditions and actually getting time in the middle,” he added.

Coley was upbeat about their approach to the second Test despite acknowledging the squad’s young and developing skill. “Everyone is cheerful and upbeat. We’ve been getting to know the guys one-on-one, but tomorrow will be our first opportunity to settle in as a team,” he said.

Coley is optimistic that the team’s experiences and lessons will help them in the forthcoming game as they go to Nottingham. In the days before the first Test, there was a lot going on both on and off the field, which I’m sure some of our players were able to take in. As a result, both players and staff have learned a great deal, and we remain optimistic as we travel to Nottingham.”
