Tiger Woods declines Ryder Cup captaincy offer as Keegan Bradley unexpectedly secures position
The American Ryder Cup squad will not be captained by Tiger Woods.
Rather, in a startling decision, the PGA of America revealed on Monday that Keegan Bradley will be assuming the enormous task.
According to The Telegraph, Woods declined the chance to captain his nation versus Europe at Bethpage in 2025.
The article states that because Woods is closely involved in the PGA Tour’s negotiations with PIF, the Saudi Arabian government’s financial arm that provided funding for LIV Golf, he would not have the time to manage the many responsibilities of the leadership.
Stewart Cink, a veteran of the PGA Tour, Davis Love III, who led the teams in 2012 and 2016, and Fred Couples were reportedly being considered for the role.
Prior to the Scottish Open, Cink said of Woods, “I thought he should have first run at it and he has,” to reporters on Monday, according to Bunkered.com. “It doesn’t surprise me that he declined because, ever since taking on the board role, the PGA Tour has been extremely busy, and he’s had to spend a lot of time off the course recovering from his injuries and getting himself back into playing shape. He’s eager to get started. It’s hardly shocking that he declined. When you add it to all that, it definitely plays a pretty significant role.
In September in Rome, the Europeans overpowered the Americans, taking an early lead and defeating the Zach Johnson-led squad 16 ³/₂ to 11 ³/₂.
Bradley was unpopularly dropped out of the squad from the previous season in favor of Justin Thomas.
Former St. John’s student Bradley had complained about the selection process, saying he was left out as he wasn’t as close to Johnson and some of his captain’s choices.
“I hope that one day I can win the Ryder Cup and open that trophy and just have a moment of peace because I think about the Ryder Cup every single day,” Bradley expressed, as reported by Sports Illustrated, in the documentary “Full Swing,” which chronicled the heartbreaking moment he was left off the team.
