The San Diego Padres defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 and 9-5 in the opening two games of a four-game series. Milwaukee wanted to win the next two games in order to tie the series. But the Padres had different ideas about capturing and retaining the second-place finish in the NL West division. After seven innings, San Diego led 6-0. The Brewers scored four runs in the top of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough as the Padres won 6-4.

San Diego took a 4-0 lead in the next inning after Padres shortstop Ha-Seong Kim blasted a solo shot to left field. Padres catcher Kyle Higashioka crushed a two-run home ball to left field two innings later. With a commanding 6-0 lead, it appeared like San Diego would win easily.

Brewers second baseman Brice Turang hit a grand slam to left field in the top of the ninth inning with two outs and the bases loaded, bringing the Padres deficit to 6-4. The game was ended by Padres reliever Robert Suárez striking out Brewers catcher William Contreras in the following at-bat. Milwaukee’s record presently stands at 44-33 following the loss. They lead the NL Central division by five games. San Diego is currently 41-40, one game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in first place in the NL West, and seven and a half games behind them in the standings.
