The duo faced off in the finals, with Brown protecting Doncic. Despite his excellent defensive abilities, Brown admitted that the assignment was difficult.
Given Luka Doncic’s range and scoring talents, the Slovenian is not an easy opponent to stop. However, his abilities were insufficient for the Dallas Mavericks to defeat the dominant Boston Celtics. But that didn’t stop Jaylen Brown from admiring Doncic. Brown and Doncic embraced after the Celtics’ overwhelming victory, demonstrating their mutual respect.

Brown’s defense on Doncic was amazing, as the Mavericks guard only scored 2 of 11 in his last three games while Brown was the primary defender. His defense also had an impact on the club, as the Mavericks scored just 131 points in 154.4 possessions while Brown was defending Doncic. Over the course of five games, the offense only had an 84.8 rating.
Despite this, Doncic averaged almost a triple-double in the finals. The star nearly averaged 30 points per game, scoring 29.2 in five outings. The statistics explain why Brown praised Doncic’s performance.

Brown was one of the players mic’d up during Game 5. During a break, Brown and the Celtics’ head coach, Joe Mazzulla, had a talk that sparked interest on social media. The forward made it obvious to the head coach and coaching staff that he wanted to stay in the game while Doncic played.
Brown’s gritty approach and superb defense earned him MVP honors in the finals. Despite enjoying a great season, Doncic was unable to win. Doncic’s next season would be keenly anticipated, given his injury this season. A rematch between the two would also be intriguing to watch, as Doncic would aim to exact retribution.
