Loachapoka, Alabama — Jabari Smith Jr. expects to be replaced in next year’s Auburn recruiting class. Smith was and is the highest-rated signee in program history, although that could change in 2025, as Bruce Pearl and Auburn are closely connected with the nation’s top prospect, AJ Dybantsa.

VIP Buzz: Highlights and notes from Auburn’s summer practices. Summer practices are underway for both football and basketball, and Hugh Freeze’s staff is in full recruiting mode, with more elite visitors on the way.

In Saturday’s VIP Buzz, we provide some current news and information from Auburn’s facilities, as summer practices for football and basketball begin and Hugh Freeze’s staff enters full recruiting gear with more elite visitors on the way.

Starting with basketball, all five of Auburn’s newcomers are presently on campus, working out and practicing during the summer, according to social media reports this week. Jahki Howard, a Furman transfer point guard and freshman wing, was the first to report, followed swiftly by SMU transfer forward Ja’Heim Hudson. Freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford arrived last week, and Georgia Tech transfer guard Miles Kelly reported just a few days ago after being in the NBA draft process and working out for prospective clubs the week before.

As expected, Pettiford, whom Bruce Pearl has been keen about not pigeonholing at point guard, has been running both the 1 and 2 positions in practice. The lineups will be mixed this summer as Pearl experiments with his extensive roster. Pettiford may not start the season, but his explosiveness and playmaking abilities will make him difficult to keep off the court.
