A football fan received a three-year ban and a suspended prison sentence for’strangulation’ at a Leeds United match.
A football fan from York has received a three-year Football Banning Order and a suspended prison sentence for ‘intentionally strangling’ a female steward at Leeds United’s 2022/23 match against Nottingham Forest.
Carl O’Brien of Lea Way, York, was charged with deliberate strangulation after putting his hand around the woman’s throat and squeezing as supporters left Elland Road on April 4, 2023. The victim is alleged to have sustained minor injuries from the event, but was able to identify O’Brien, resulting in a quick arrest.
In addition to a three-year ban from English stadiums, the 51-year-old was given a 20-month suspended prison sentence, fined £187, and ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work.
Following O’Brien’s punishment, Chief Superintendent Russell Hughes stated: “Violence against match stewards is absolutely not tolerated.”
“As a result of his acts, O’Brien is now prohibited from attending any football match.
“We work closely with Leeds United and visiting clubs to fully investigate any offences committed, and we will take strong action against individuals guilty, including obtaining Football Banning Orders against them.
“People who engage in such behaviour have no place at football grounds in West Yorkshire or anywhere else in the country.”
