Red Sox get critical Tyler O’Neill and Masataka Yoshida injury updates.
Things are improving for the two offensive contributors.
The Boston Red Sox are looking to break out of their mediocre start to the 2024 MLB season. Boston slumped 28-29 after losing the first game of their late-May series against the Detroit Tigers. Furthermore, the Red Sox received important injury updates for pitcher Tyler O’Neill and outfielder Masataka Yoshida ahead of their second game.
Tyler O’Neill’s injury issues stem from right knee irritation, which increased during Boston’s May 25th game against the Milwaukee Brewers. As a result, the Red Sox placed him on the 10-day injured list. However, O’Neill received a cortisol shot in his knee and intends to play when he is eligible to be activated on Wednesday, according to Ian Browne.
Meanwhile, Masataka Yoshida is battling with a thumb ailment, prompting Boston to place him on the 10-day injured list. According to Jen McCaffrey, Yoshida began swinging off a tee on Thursday and believes he will be able to begin batting practice soon. In addition, he is receiving a variety of bespoke thumbs to try.
Hopefully, O’Neill and Yoshida will heal quickly and return to help Boston win.
Tyler O’Neill batted.236 before his injury, hit 11 home runs, and had 17 RBI with a.843 OPS (24th in the league). His offensive presence adds much-needed depth to the Red Sox.
Masataka Yoshida has not had the best start, but he has served Boston well. The 30-year-old batted.275, two home runs, and 11 RBIs with a.736 OPS. He, like O’Neill, will add depth to Boston’s lineup when he returns.
While O’Neill and Yoshida recover, the Red Sox will strive to climb the AL East standings.
The Red Sox look forward to the new month.
Before facing the Tigers, the Red Sox had just completed a difficult series against the Baltimore Orioles. Boston entered Wednesday night’s game at 28-27, only one game above.500. After losing their first game to Baltimore 11-3 on Monday, they rallied with an 8-3 victory on Tuesday. Unfortunately, Boston dropped their final game of the series 6-1, bringing them at 28–28.
The Red Sox’s difficulties did not stop there. They lost 5-0 to the Tigers on Thursday night. Detroit’s offense was too much for Boston to handle. They will not make the remainder of the series easy. Their team is led by a few contributors.
Matt Verling, a 27-year-old right-hander, leads the team in batting average (.288) and ranks 23rd in the league. He has also hit two home runs, collected 11 RBI, and has an OPS of.736. Verling had four at-bats on Wednesday and recorded one run, one hit, and one walk.
Riley Greene contributed to Verling’s effort with similar numbers, except he hit one home run and had two RBI.
The Sox want to see more from Jalen Duran and Wyler Abreu. Duran batted four times and had no hits. Meanwhile, Abreu batted three times and had nothing to show for it.
If Boston can refocus and execute, they can flip the series around and gain momentum heading into June.
