Braves take a shot at one-time All-Star IF.
As they fall further behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the division, the Atlanta Braves are looking for backup. On Friday, the Braves announced that infielder Joey Wendle had signed a major league deal. In a related move, they will option fellow infielder Luke Williams to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Wendle, 34, was named an All-Star for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021. He adds defensive versatility to the infield and has generally performed well against right-handed pitching. Granted, 2024 has been a forgettable year for Wendle thus far. He hit.222 with a sub-.500 OPS in 18 games for the New York Mets this season before being designated for assignment. Wendle will now seek to rebound elsewhere in the NL East, with the 29-18 Braves, who just took a swipe at a former Wendle colleague.
