Mavericks superstar now in line for largest contract ever.

On Wednesday, the NBA unveiled the All-NBA teams for the 2023-24 season. It is not surprising that Luka Doncic’s name appears on the All-NBA First Team, since this has been a typical occurrence for him throughout his brief career. Doncic, 25, had a nice day overall. His Dallas Mavericks beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 108-105 in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.

That puts the sixth-year guard only three wins away from his first NBA Finals appearance. Doncic ended Game 1 with 33 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and three steals. While Doncic’s primary attention is undoubtedly on the postseason, word came that he is now eligible to become a very wealthy man in the near future.

Doncic is Now Eligible For the Supermax

Following the announcement of the All-NBA teams, Bobby Marks of ESPN reported that Doncic will be eligible for the supermax extension in the 2025 offseason. If he receives it, it will be the richest contract in league history.

Doncic, the third overall choice in the 2018 NBA Draft, has been named to the All-NBA First Team in each of the previous five seasons. Since being named Rookie of the Year in 2018-19, the 6-7″ Slovenian has been a top candidate for MVP. Since the 2019-20 season, he has been fourth, sixth, fifth, eighth, and third in MVP voting.

This season was Doncic’s best finish in MVP voting. He earned his first scoring title, posting an astonishing 33.9 points per game. Doncic also had the second-most assists (9.8), eighth-most steals (1.4), and fifteenth-most rebounds (9.2). Notably, Doncic has averaged the most ppg, plus, apg plus, and rpg since 1970. His 284 three-pointers trailed just Stephen Curry as the league leader.

Doncic has a player option for the 2025-26 season, which he is likely to refuse. It would be astonishing if the Mavericks declined to offer him the supermax in order to keep the superstar in town.

Will the Mavericks Reach the NBA Finals?

This is Doncic’s second appearance in the Western Conference Finals with the Dallas Mavericks. In 2022, the Mavericks advanced that far but were defeated in five games by the Golden State Warriors. This season represents a significant improvement over 2022-23, when they did not even qualify for the Play-In Tournament. A complete season with Kyrie Irving and in-season trades for P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford significantly increased the team’s ceiling.

Since their first season in 1980-81, the Mavericks have made two trips to the NBA Finals. In 2006, they dropped six games to the Miami Heat. They were able to exact retribution five years later, in 2011, when they defeated Miami in six games to win their first and only championship. After defeating the Timberwolves in Game 1, the Mavericks are -165 favorites to win the series, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. They are also listed at +340 odds to win the 2024 NBA Finals. The second game of the Western Conference Finals is scheduled on Friday in Minnesota.
