Everton make first move for £25 million star, as club president arrives for negotiations.
Everton have shifted their focus to new faces for Sean Dyche’s team, despite financial worries off the pitch.
Everton transfer news
The Toffees have been placed at a precarious crossroads, with 777 Partners’ takeover still pending approval from the Premier League and seems increasingly unlikely to take place at all. Without a takeover, they will most certainly be forced to sell key players like Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana in order to obtain necessary finances.
Dyche hinted at the probable difficulty in a press conference right before the conclusion of the season, telling The Guardian: “If the [777] takeover does not happen, or if there is a takeover, it will most likely be juggling dust, not sand.
“Because who knows now? You’ll have to manufacture everything yourself, I’m guessing, because there isn’t a bunch of cash lying around. And if you self-generate, how do you replenish what you’re losing? If someone leaves, how do you replace them with someone as good? There is no time for growth [of young players] since this club does not have the time.”
However, this has not stopped the rumors from spreading. According to Graeme Bailey of HITC, Everton have contacted Corinthians president Augusto Melo about Wesley Gassova’s availability, with Melo planning to come to England for the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund while also discussing Wesley.
Those talks may not be with Everton, however, as West Ham United is said to have submitted a first offer for the young Brazilian for half of the £25 million asking price, and negotiations are now poised to begin. Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Fulham are also reportedly interested in the left winger.
Everton can’t afford the risk of Wesley
Only 19 years old and valued £25 million, Everton should wonder if they should spend their restricted transfer capital on a player who, despite his promise, is unlikely to be ready for the Premier League immediately.
While it will be disappointing, and the fact that they are unable to take such risks will be aggravating, the Toffees should focus on established players during the summer transfer window.
It is also unclear whether Everton will be able to spend such money in the coming months without player sales. In an ideal world, a takeover would allow those at Goodison Park to focus on future stars while also upgrading Dyche’s present roster. At this point, however, that ideal world appears to be more of a fiction.
Meanwhile, Wesley appears to be preparing to make a decision this summer. With his future ahead of him and a slew of Premier League clubs interested, he must find the ideal next club, which might mean Everton is overlooked regardless of their financial situation following their recent relegation struggles.
